Please join us in congratulating Officer Alyxander Pasquale on being the second Town of Tonawanda Police Officer in history to receive the Town of Tonawanda Police Department Medal of Valor.

On December 8th, 2022, at approximately 1110 hours, Officer Pasquale responded to the area of 145 Wellington Avenue for a 911 call stating a female was being chased by a male with a knife. Upon arrival, Officer Pasquale recognized that the male suspect was elderly and may be suffering from dementia or a mental health episode. The suspect, armed with a kitchen knife and a long metal object, immediately charged Officer Pasquale. Officer Pasquale deployed his Taser, which stopped the suspect from charging but did not incapacitate him as intended.

Officer Pasquale created distance between himself and the male and gave strong verbal commands to distract and occupy the suspect’s attention until additional patrols could arrive. The suspect however turned and began to approach the female victim and two bystanders in a threatening manner again. Officer Pasquale, at risk to his own personal safety, stepped in between the suspect and victim and deployed OC spray in an attempt to prevent further harm to the victim. The suspect again stopped progressing towards the victim and turned his attention back to Officer Pasquale. Officer Pasquale deployed his OC spray two more times, keeping the male at bay and causing the male to drop the knife.

As another patrol arrived on scene, the suspect charged at Officer Pasquale a third time while still holding the metal object in a menacing manner. He then quickly turned and began to make his way back towards the victim yet again. At this time, realizing that the window to use non-lethal force to stop the suspect was quickly closing, Officer Pasquale heroically advanced on the armed suspect and tackled him to the ground. Officer Pasquale and Officer Thompson were then able to take the suspect into custody without any further use of force. The suspect suffered only a few minor scrapes and exposure to OC spray.

After the fact, it was determined that the female victim was the suspect’s wife, and she had been cut several times with the knife. The victim confirmed that the suspect suffered from dementia and was delusional at the time of the incident.

Officer Pasquale maintained composure and placed the wellbeing of the victim, innocent bystanders and even the suspect above his own, leading to a positive outcome. Officer Pasquale’s selflessness, bravery, and critical decision making allowed him to use less-lethal means to subdue the suspect in a situation that justified lethal force. Officer Pasquale’s actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of police service and reflect great credit upon the Town of Tonawanda Police Department. It is my recommendation that this exemplary act of valor be formally recognized.

The Town of Tonawanda takes recovered animals to the West Seneca Animal Impound located at:

The dog owners MUST call West Seneca to set up an appointment to get your dog, you cannot just showing up at the shelter. You will need proof of a valid dog license and a valid rabies certificate. If you do not have said documents, West Seneca will have to make an appointment with one of their vets to get a shot at your expense. West Seneca will also license the dog at owners expense, as their Town Clerk does not open until 8:30 am. Be advised . West Seneca will only hold the dogs for 5 days, if no one claims the animal they will be transferred to the SPCA.
