The Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center brings new opportunities for you and your family. Learn to swim, take up aquatic fitness, join an aerobics class, improve your muscle tone and much more. It offers something for everyone through its various programs and its 50-meter main pool, kiddie pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, fitness room and aerobics room.

Membership Information

Memberships are available in a variety of packages to suit your individual lifestyle. All of the listed annual memberships are valid for 380 days from date of purchase.

All 50 meters and 780,000 gallons of it, can, and usually is divided in the center by the “bulkhead” which allows us far greater programming flexibility. Since we then create two separate pools, each of which typically have multiple activities taking place. With a water temperature of about 82.5 degrees, this pool is the location for so many activities for people of so many ages.

Swim lessons, water exercise classes, recreational swimming, lap swimming, SCUBA classes, and swim team and synchronized swimming practices are typical daily activities taking place in the pool. Luckily, we always have space for recreational swimming and lap swimming.

With its 83 degree water ranging from six to twenty four inches, it is site of some high energy good times for four to seven year olds.  (Children younger than four years need to be physically accompanied by a parent or guardian, who is in the pool within arm’s reach of the child at all times.)  U.S. Coast Guard approved flotation (lifejackets or PFD’s) devices only are permitted if you feel your child needs some extra support.

With water of about 101 degrees it can accommodate up to 13 people that simply want to soak and relax.  While it can be tempting to stay in for long periods of time (in excess of 10 minutes) consider stepping out to cool off with a quick shower and if you wish head back in for a short stay.  If you are curious as to the age one can use our whirlpool, please refer to the  Whirlpool Age Requirements notification.

A couple other amenities you’ll find on the deck are the sauna and steam room. The sauna is kept between 160 and 180 degrees. The steam room should be hot, moist, and steamy. Enjoy these areas for about 10 minutes in order to avoid the dangers of over heating.

Swim Lesson Guide Information

The Aquatic and Fitness Center follows the swim lesson guidelines put in place by the American Red Cross. Taught by Red Cross Certified Lifeguards, lessons are offered throughout the whole calendar year.  If desired, private lessons are also offered for a 1 on 1 learning experience.

Registration for all levels of swim lessons needs to be completed at the Aquatic & Fitness Center during operating hours. Parent and Child lessons and Preschool Aquatic lessons do not require any prequisites but the child must fall into the given age ranges. To register for Learn to Swim Levels 1 through Level 6, a Swim Testing Verification and Registration form or report card from the most recent swim lesson session must be presented to the front desk at the time of registration. Testing times are Saturdays after 2 p.m. and Sundays after 12 noon.

Parent and Child is intended to give parents safety information and teach techniques to orient their children to the water. Children are introduced to the water and taught swimming readiness skills through their parent with aid from the instructor. Instructors will provide direction regarding how to supervise water activities in a responsible manner. Children should be at least six months old through approximately three years of age. A Swim Test Verification and Registration Form is not required.

This primary objective of the preschool aquatics program is to promote the learning of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills at a pace appropriate for this age group. Participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around the water. Children should be between four and five years of age. Parents are not permitted in these lessons. If your child needs a parent to be in the pool with them, they will have to enroll in the Parent & Child Aquatics program. A Swim Test Verification and Registration Form is not required.

Learn to swim level 1 is designed to make participants comfortable in the water and orient them to the aquatic environment. Basic personal water safety information and aquatic skills are taught. Participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around the water. Children should be six years of age or older. Participants in this level may use bubble belts or need support from the instructor.

—  To progress to Level 2, students must pass all skills with no more than one bubble.

Level 2 marks the beginning of having “locomotion” in the water. Participants build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Children should be six years of age and older and have passed Level 1. Participants in this level may enter using single bubble belt or needing support from the instructor, but may not graduate until they can swim independently.

— To progress to Level 3, students must pass all skills without the support of bubbles or the instructor.

In level 3, the aim is to help participants achieve basic water competency in the pool. Participants learn front crawl and elementary backstroke, and multiple different kicks. Children should be six years of age and older and have passed Level 2. Participants in this level must be able to swim independently of any support.

In this level, participants start to develop confidence in the strokes and improve those strokes and other aquatic skills. Endurance begins to be stressed as the strokes previously learned will be swum for greater distances. Children should be six years of age and older and have passed Level 3.

Refining and perfecting technique of all swimming strokes are the objectives of level 5. Additionally, endurance is increased and flip turns are introduced. Children should be six years of age and older and have passed Level 4.

This level refines strokes so participants can swim with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness and for greater distance. Registrants will have a choice of three swimming related courses: Personal Water Safety, Fitness Swimmer, and Fundamentals of Diving.


Private Swim Lessons
Let our certified water safety instructors teach you or your child how to swim and be safe in and around the water. A punch card of (6) 30 minute lessons are available ($60 member/ $85 non-member).  In order to get started, an pdf interest sheet (43 KB) needs to be completed and given to the aquatic staff at the facility.

Aerobics and Fitness Information
Along side the pool area of the faciliy, the Aquatic & Fitness Center also has an Aerobics Room which hosts land exercise classes and a fully equiped Fitness Room which will appeal to those looking to work out and stay dry.

Since opening in 1991, the fitness room has been expanded 3 different times in order to become the size it is today. The room is currently composed of areas designated for stretching, cardio work outs, seated strength machine exercises and a free weight exercises. Virtually anywhere in the fitness room, you can watch your favorite show during your workout on one of our 10 HD TV’s.  Attached to the fitness room is a full locker room area which includes individual showers as well as individual storage lockers for ones belongings.

Land and water aerobics classes are offered 7 days a week and range from high intensity, upbeat aerobics all the way to moderate paced classes for beginners and those suffering joint pains. As an additional cost to a membership, anyone can take classes by enrolling in a class section, purchasing a “punch card” or utilizing the “walk-in rate” method.  Click HERE to check our pricing or look into our ulimated class membership HERE.

In our facility, individuals ages 16 and older are allowed to use the fitness room on their own. With the required paperwork, we do allow youth, ages 13-15, to use the facility while under the supervision of an adult from their family. Please read our Youth Policy Sheet for more information.

For children ages 10-12, we do offer a beginners class listed as "Crash Course" on our aerobics class list. Meeting once a week, this class introduces it's participants to the specifics of our fitness room as well as provides them with information on how to work out safely and properly.

Our personal trainers can provide you with their undivided attention to push you to get the most out of you work outs. With sessions starting as short as 30 mins, both members and non-members of our facility can experience our great “New Beginnings” program. With rates differentiating depending on membership status, individuals can initiate their personal training experience at any time. Check here for low price packages!  

How to Get started:

In order to participate in our personal training program, you must first come in and fill out one of our PAR-Q’s and an interest sheet while at our facility. Once you hand it in and it is looked over by one of trainers, you will be notified if a physician’s referral is required.  If deemed necessary, this referral must signed by your physician and returned to our facility in order to participate in the program.  Once the required paperwork in our hands, we will set up an appointment for an Evaluation & Orientation. The Evaluation and Orientation is about an hour long appointment where a trainer will:

  1. Perform a comprehensive Fitness Evaluation to determine the member’s current fitness levels and identify specific goals.
  2. Guide the member through an Orientation of the facility, highlighting specific aspects of the facility that will help them meet their fitness goals.

After this Evaluation & Orientation has taken place, depending on trainer availability, you will be able to start your personal training experience by setting up your first appointment with one of our certified staff members.  

American Red Cross Classes
The Aquatic & Fitness Center offers dozens of American Red Cross Health and Safety Services classes throughout the year. These class are categorized a"Full" which is for people who need certification the first time or who have allowed a previous certification to lapse more than one month,"Review" courses which will review the course material using videos, textbooks, and question and answer sessions and "Challenge" courses which do not review the course materials but still requires passing all test components. Look at the various classes offered below.

This course teaches one- and two-rescuer CPR, use of an AED, use of resuscitation masks and bag-valve masks for ventilating victims, and how to respond in special rescue situations.
Prerequisites: None.
Course Length: Full Course-8 hours, Review Course-4 hours, Challenge Course- 3 hours

Prepare you to respond to basic emergencies, and recognize and care for injuries while using the EMS system. 

Prerequisites: None.

Course Length:  3.5 hours (There is no Review or Challenge class available)

Each course we offer includes First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Health Care Provider, Administering Emergency Oxygen. (Only Full and Review courses are available, Challenge courses are not.)

Prerequisites
:
 15 years old by the last day of class; swim 300 yards using front crawl and breaststroke; swim one length, retrieve a 10 pound brick in 7 to 10 feet of water and carry it back to starting point using only your legs, and exit the pool in one minute, forty seconds, and tread water without hands for two minutes.

Course Length
: Full Course- 30 hours, Review Course- 14 hours

The Lifeguard Training Instructor course teaches one to plan and teach the Lifeguard Training and other associated courses.

Prerequisites
17 years of age and current lifeguard training certification.

Course Length
: 27 hours. 

The Water Safety Instructor course teaches one to plan and teach swimming and aquatic safety courses.

Prerequisites:
16 years of age by the last day of the class; swim 25 yards each of front and back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and 15 yards of butterfly; float/scull on back for one minute in deep water; tread water for one minute.Learn to Swim Level 4 ability

Course Length
33 hours.

Learn the basic skills for Waterfront lifeguarding for work in beach front and open water environments. This course is offered in June only.

Prerequisites: Current lifeguard certification which must be presented at the beginning of class.

Course Length
: 7 hours.
